Welcome to On Repeat —where I skip the internet’s music critics and talk about what’s actually on repeat (in my Spotify libary anyway)
Sometimes an artist I love drops a brand new project, and my first instinct isn’t to hit play on track one. My first instinct is to go listen to something they put out three years ago.
Or worse: I’ll actually start listening to a new album, get halfway through, and immediately start scrolling down their Spotify discography just to find that familiar sound I already know and love
i’m sure there’s lowkey some theory behind that but for me it’s like…I take music extremely seriously, so I think I just have to be in a very specific headspace to truly digest something new. I’m not listening to music to draft a tweet, write a pitchfork critique, or debate whether an artist has “fallen off,” is “rinsed,” or isn’t charting high enough—all that noise “real music listeners” love to obsess over these days. I listen to music to escape into it and enjoy it. It’s pretty much about appreciating the artist’s sound for me
So I guess it’s not a bad thing that I love revisiting old music. Nostalgia and comfort are powerful things. But sometimes it’s like… damn, I actually forget to go back and finish the new shit
Anyway, since you’re here, On Repeat just might be my favourite category (as a #musiclova ofc) and its going to be very minimal hot takes, zero chart tracking, and excessive music recommendations. Get in, babe!
